What the organisers say:
'Set in classic Lakeland Mountain terrain this route will challenge the best climbers! For those who want to tackle the bigger route another time, the SHORTER ROUTE will built up your stamina. Starting from Coniston, you follow the road north to Ambleside for a gentle warm-up before tackling the Struggle to the top of Kirkstone Pass. A fast descent follows, taking you down to the shores of Ullswater and then on to the climb of Dockray. From here you turn west towards St. John’s in the Vale. The first feed station is at the head of Thirlmere and signals the gentler climb of Dunmail Raise. Here you continue south to Grasmere and the little known climb of Red Bank. After a short descent the routes split with the shorter route climbing up Skelwith hill and down to the finish at Coniston.
For those of you on the LONGER ROUTE, you then turn west at the bottom of Red Bank, to head over the next climb to Blea Tarn. Now you embark on the Queen of Lakeland Climbs: Wrynose Pass from the East! After descending Wrynose on the other side, you will take in the steep bends of the formidable Hardknott Pass, continue on into Eskdale and here take in the second feed of the day. You then continue towards the west coast . Before Muncaster Castle you will turn back and onto the day’s longest climb - Corney Fell. Fast descents follow, leading you into the Duddon Valley and Ulpha. Over Dunnerdale Fell you come onto Broughton Moor before dropping swiftly down to Torver. The final few miles gently ease your legs after all these climbs as you head into the finish at Coniston!'
